Final Topic

My final topic for my Experience and Other Evidence paper is medical malpractice. Like I noted in my last blog, this is a touchy subject for me because of my experience with it. This event took place the summer before I was in the sixth grade. My mom underwent a tonsillectomy. She was said to recover in a couple of weeks but instead her condition worsened. This ended with my mom having twenty-two stitches on her neck and a vivid memory of a near death experience. This is what inspires this paper. I want to get to the core of medical malpractice.
The questions I will mainly address in this paper are those in the definition and cause and effect stasis. I will attempt to define medical malpractice and tie it in with my personal experience. The following questions fall under the definition stasis: What is medical malpractice? Does it exist worldwide? Do guidelines exist when dealing with medical malpractice? Along with the definition stasis, I will also answer questions regarding cause and effect. For example, What cause medical malpractice to become recognized? How did its creation effect the medical field? These questions are the basis from which my paper will be constructed.

  1. Medical malpractice is a very touchy subject because doctors absolutely need to be held accountable for their mistakes (as is the case with your mom), but far too often doctors are being sued for ridiculous reasons. It is cheaper for a hospital to settle a lawsuit rather than go to trial, so there are far too many unfair lawsuits that end up tarnishing a doctor's name and giving money to an undeserving patient. Great topic for a paper. I almost did the same thing

  2. I have to agree this topic is both very sensitive but quite an eye opener. I guess people have an idea of what malpractice is but don't really know what it is. I wonder if you'll touch on the relationship between society and doctors because of this. Has the veil finally pulled over our eyes and we see what doctors really are, human.Or do we still keep this high pedestal for those in the medical field despite instances such as medical practices?

  3. This paper should be really awesome to read because of your personal experience. There will be a slight emotional tone to it which I think will make the whole paper way more interesting. You'll do a great job.

  4. My Magic thesis sentence:
By looking at the concept of medical malpractice, we can see what classifies as malpractice and how it is handled , which most readers don't see; this is important because this can happen to anyone and it is a very controversial issue.

  5. You have a nice start here, Rosa. I know this is a sensitive subject for you, and I think that incorporating your personal story, with the right tone and control, will really draw your reader in to the very important questions you raise. I like that you want to first explore what malpractice is, how it is classified. You might also look at how did it become so popular in the U.S. (versus other countries in Europe and Asia, which have a much lower incidence of lawsuits against doctors). While you might not touch on it in this paper, it may also be helpful for you to research the cost implications for both doctors (who need to buy malpractice insurance) and for the health care system in general. Do malpractice suits make medical care more expensive for the nation as a whole? This might come in handy for your Considering Another Side paper (I know of some statistics surrounding the debate regarding whether if we sued less, healthcare might be more affordable). For this paper, though, I encourage you to go with your feelings on the matter and be sure to find evidence that will help you explore how malpractice came to be defined in the first place. Nice work.
